Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister, played a vital role in convincing several princely states to join India. To mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and in memory of his contribution to the Union of India, Unity Day is celebrated in India on October 31st every year. Sardar Patel played an important role in including the states in the Indian Union to maintain the unity and integrity of the country. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had a major role in political unification of India.
In 2014, the Indian government designated October 31 as National Unity Day as a tribute to Vallabhbhai Patel’s legacy.
